Don’t count them twice

Tips and overtime are already part of the total in box 1a (1099-NEC, 1099-K) or box 3 (1099-MISC). Enter them in their own boxes and leave the total as it is.

Use 12-character amounts

Right-justify and zero-fill. The last two positions are cents, so 000000065000 means $650.00.

Up to two TTOC codes

The tipped occupation code field holds up to two 3-digit codes. Use 000 for any nonqualifying occupation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about moving from FIRE to IRIS, the converter and the new 2026 fields.

FIRE is the IRS’s older e-file system for information returns, and IRIS replaces it. From January 1, 2027, IRIS is the only IRS system for e-filing information returns.

Yes, until November 19, 2026 at 3 p.m. ET. Tax year 2026 returns can be filed only through IRIS.

No. Returns FIRE already accepted stay valid, and you don’t need to refile them.

No. A FIRE TCC doesn’t carry over to IRIS. When you file with TaxBandits, you don’t need a TCC of your own.

It’s a Publication 1220 plain-text file made of 750-character records. The record types are T (transmitter), A (payer), B (payee), C (end of payer totals), K (state totals) and F (end of transmission).

Yes. Uploading your own file happens inside your free TaxBandits account. You can try a sample conversion on this page without one.

Yes. Write the values into the B record at the listed positions before you upload, or convert the file as it is and add the new fields for the affected recipients through a separate CSV.

Yes. A single upload can include several payers, each matched to a business in your account, and mixed form types, including state (K) records.

It’s encrypted in transit and at rest and used only to build your forms and the CSV. Unless you choose to file with TaxBandits, the data isn’t stored. It’s deleted automatically, and it’s never shared or sold.

We tell you why. For example, each record should be exactly 750 characters, every record should start with T, A, B, C, K or F, and the file needs at least one payer (A) record and one recipient (B) record. Check the export settings in your software, or run a sample to compare.

IRIS supports tax year 2022 and onward. Holders of a FIRE TCC can file late or prior-year returns through FIRE until the November 19 cutoff. After that, those returns go through IRIS.

1099-NEC is due to the IRS and to recipients by February 1, 2027, because January 31 falls on a Sunday. For most other 1099s, recipient copies are generally due the same day, and e-filing with the IRS is due March 31, 2027.
