If for some reason you're unable to file your 1099, or ACA Forms by their original due date, you can get an automatic 30-day extension of time to file by completing Form 8809. The form can be submitted on paper or online, however it must be filed by the original due date of your return(s) in order to qualify for the extension.

Extensions for Form W-2, 1099-MISC reporting nonemployee compensation (NEC) in box 7, 1099-QA, 5498-QA are not automatic. 30-day extensions are only provided under extraordinary circumstances or a catastrophe destroying the books and records for filing the forms. Thus, when applying for an extension by paper filing Form 8809 with the SSA, you are required to offer a detailed explanation for why you need the extension, and sign the form under penalty of perjury.
