Q. Does Iowa mandate W-2 filing for 2020?

A. Yes, Iowa mandates the filing of the W2 forms if there is a state tax withholding.

Note: The state does not accept paper copies of W-2.

Q. What are the W-2 penalties for Iowa?

A. Failure to file W-2 or pay taxes on time with the State of Iowa and not furnishing payee copies will
result in penalties.

  • Penalties for filing W-2 late
    • If you do not file your W2 by the due date and at least 90% of the tax amount is not paid, the penalty would be an additional 10% of your unpaid tax.
  • Penalties for not paying the state withholding tax on time
    • If you have filed your W-2 on time but failed to pay at least 90% of the tax amount, the penalty would be an additional 5% of your unpaid tax.

    Note: You will never be subject to both penalties above.

Q. Can I file the correction form W-2c with the State of Iowa?

A. Yes, you can file the corrected W-2 with Iowa. Remember, the state does not have a separate process for correcting the W-2 or support W-2c. If you want to correct the previously filed W-2, you must file a
new W-2 electronically.
