What is IRS Form 2290?

Form 2290 is an annual tax return filed by owners/drivers of heavy vehicles to calculate and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). Any vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds must file Form 2290 and pay the HVUT if the vehicle is operated on the public highways during the tax year.

When is Form 2290 due for the 2023-24 tax period?

The deadline to file Form 2290 is the last day of the month subsequent to the month, the vehicle was first used on the public highways during the tax year. The current tax year begins on July 1, 2023, and ends on June 30, 2024.

Since most truckers prefer to put their vehicle on the road at the start of every month, the deadline to file Form 2290 for most truckers is on
August 31, 2023.

What payment methods can I use to pay my Heavy Vehicle Use Tax?

The IRS offers the users three different payment options to pay their Heavy Vehicle Use Tax.

  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
  • Check or Money Order

The payment of HVUT using a credit/debit card has been temporarily suspended but is expected to resume from January 1, 2022.

What is Form 2290 Mailing Address?

If you choose “Check or Money Order” as your payment option, you must send in a check payable to the U.S. Department of Treasury within the filing deadline. You must print the Form 2290-V payment voucher and enclose it along with your check and send it to the following address.

What is IRS Form 2290 HVUT Penalties?

If you do not file Form 2290 and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) within the deadline, you will be subject to penalties and interest. The penalties and interest imposed by the IRS are as follows.

  • A penalty of 4.5% of the total tax due, assessed monthly for up to five months for not filing Form 2290 within the given deadline.
  • A monthly penalty of 0.5% of the total tax due for underpayment of HVUT.
  • Additional interest charges of 0.54% per month accrue.

You must pay your Form 2290 HVUT penalties through check. If you have a reasonable cause as to why you didn’t file your Form 2290 or pay your HVUT within the deadline, the IRS might consider waiving your penalties.
